Have you ever wonder what’s the difference between a fashion stylist, a wardrobe stylist and a personal stylist? To all my inspiring stylist its important to know the difference in order to market yourself correctly.
Fashion stylists, also known as wardrobe stylists or celebrity stylists, are responsible for a crafting and coordinating garments and accessories to create outfits for a client. A fashion stylist always needs to be ahead of the up and coming trends in fashion; the fashion-styling career is extremely involved in fashion trends and fashion forecasting for each season. The daily work of a fashion stylist can be extremely fast-paced and exciting. Throughout the course of a fashion stylist’s day, they may attend many meetings prior to a styling assignment, travel to fashion shows, and showrooms.

A fashion stylist is someone who selects the clothing for models, public figures and celebrities, for published editorial features, print or television advertising campaigns, music videos, and public appearances. For example, during a magazine shoot the art director informs the stylist of the theme and what brands needs to be featured. The work of an editorial stylist is published in the magazine and credit is given to the hair/wardrobe stylist and the photographer. Sometimes the model will receive credit as well. Some editorial stylist are freelance but most work for an advertising firm or magazine.

A personal stylist works with “real people”. Meaning “real people” who need help getting dress. As a personal stylist you are responsible for understanding what styles of clothing suit their natural features and lifestyle. Being a personal stylist it is your responsibility to help the client achieve confidence in the way they look and feel. During a consultation with a personal stylist he/she will cover color selections, body shape clarification, styles that suit your lifestyle and brands that are in line with your wardrobe budget. Interesting enough there is not much difference between a personal stylist and wardrobe stylist. However, the term wardrobe stylist is used in the film-industry. They typically work with actors/actress for a particular movie or sitcom. The have the luxury or having what they call “dressers” to pull clothing for the movie or sitcom for the wardrobe stylist to put together.
